Understanding the First Pillar of Islam – Shahadah
Why Shahadah is the Foundation of Islam
Islam is built on five strong foundations, known as the Five Pillars of Islam. The first and most important pillar is Shahada – the declaration of faith. Without Shahada, a person cannot enter Islam. It is not just a phrase, but a complete belief that connects a Muslim’s heart, mind, and soul with Allah.
What is Shahadah?
The word Shahada comes from the Arabic word “شهادة” which means testimony or witnessing.
It is expressed in the following words:
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ، مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ
Meaning: There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah.
This is the core belief of every Muslim.
By saying Shahada with sincerity, a person enters Islam.
Why is Shahadah Important?
Foundation of Faith: It is the key to Islam; without Shahada, other pillars (Salah, Zakat, Sawm, Hajj) have no meaning.
Direct Connection with Allah: It removes all partners and confirms that Allah is One.
Acceptance of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): It confirms that he is the last messenger.
First Question in the Grave: Belief in Allah and His Messenger is the first test after death.
Unity of Muslims: All Muslims around the world are united under the Shahada.
Benefits of Shahadah
Spiritual Peace: Declaring faith in Allah brings inner calm.
Guidance in Life: Helps Muslims choose right over wrong.
Protection from Shirk: Reminds us that only Allah deserves worship.
Key to Paradise: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: Whoever sincerely says “La ilaha illallah” will enter Jannah. (Hadith – Sahih Bukhari)
Strengthens Iman: Reciting Shahada daily refreshes belief.
How to Teach Shahadah to Children
Start with Memorization: Make them repeat the words daily in short sessions.
Explain the Meaning Simply: Tell them – Allah is One, and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is His Messenger.
Use Stories: Share stories of the Prophets to build belief.
Practice in Daily Life: Teach children to say Shahada before sleeping, when afraid, or while praying.
Lead by Example: Parents should live according to Shahada so children follow naturally.
Living According to Shahadah
Shahada is not just about words – it must be shown in actions:
Pray five times a day.
Avoid sins and dishonesty.
Treat people with kindness, as taught by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Always remember Allah is watching.
